Earth Bound 0 Glitches
Earth Bound 0 is a game with a notable amount of glitches, and players might want to have fun with them. Some stuff here is called a glitch, despite not really qualifying as a glitch; basically, if it makes the game act in a way that was not intended, despite being possible (such as, say, beating an enemy not expected to be beaten because the developers thought that party would be too low-levelled), it will be here. This section also covers fake glitches.

Keep EVE
Description
This applies to every battle in the game. If a battle goes on for 255 rounds, the text will say "The battle lingered on..." and you will emerge from the fight as if the battle had not occurred. You can keep EVE like this by going 255 rounds through the R7307XX fight. Of course, R7307XX has to miss enough times, too. It's very luck based and probably not something you'll want to exploit, but if you have enough time, you may want to try this out.
What's really happening?
Game data is stored in binary (base 2), which is easily converted to hexadecimal (base 16), which is simpler to read. The maximum amount of data that can be stored in two digits in hexadecimal is FF, or 255. When the battle reaches its 255th turn, the game will realize that it cannot store anymore turn data, and end the battle.
Not as clear is why the game counts each turn. It has been speculated that it may have to do with the status conditions, or maybe special boss battles, such as Giegue's.
Breadcrumbs (Famicom only) glitch
Description
In the Famicom version of Mother, you can use the breadcrumbs to essentially make the game go "o_o". So, you know how breadcrumbs work: put bread somewhere, use crumbs to get to bread. Now, what if someone uses crumbs without having set the bread somewhere? This happens in the Famicom version; when you return Pippi to her mother and then talk to her at her house, she'll give you all her items, crumbs included. If you use the crumbs, Ninten will go to the game's default co-ordinate: 0,0.
- Method:
- Return Pippi to the mayor.
- Go to Pippi's house. Talk to her so that she gives you her inventory.
- Open your inventory and use the breadcrumbs.
- The screen will fade to black and you will appear in crazy black and white world. Congratulations; you can now go anywhere on the world map. To refresh the map so that it loads normally, go into a building.
There is also an extension of the glitch that can be done in any version. It happens later in the game, however.
The following pictures were taken by m-tiger of starmen.net forums.
- Method:
- Did you notice on the map above that there were some big, gray areas? They are usually blocked by trees and such, but there's a spot in the game where you can go there. First, get some bread and go to the train station after clearing the debris.
- Follow the outlined path and stand in the spot where a single tree is behind the other trees. Use the bread, and then use the crumbs.
- The game will load the gray area. You can move about the world map as you please now. You can use the breadcrumbs to reload the area so that it will be normal.
What's really happening?
When you set bread down, the game tracks that coordinate. If you use the crumbs without the bread, the game will teleport you to the default location of 0,0.
Fake Glitches
The following were once believed to be glitches, but have since been disproven.
Run Glitch
Description
Using the 'run' function in the English translation of Mother will double your enemy encounter rate!
What's really happening?
Let's say you use an emulator. You have a save-state in an area with random encounters. You walk, you count, and it takes you 30 steps for you to run into an enemy. Now, you load that save-state again, run, and count the number of steps it takes for an enemy appear. It would take you 30 steps. However, because the 'run' function in EB0 increases the speed of the game, you have the feeling that you run into more enemies in less time, even though it took you the same amount of time.
Verdict
Running does not affect the encounter rate at all; it only gives the impression that there are more enemies.
Menu Glitch
Description
Supposedly, if you take a step into a place where enemies appear and open the menu after each step, you can decrease the enemy enconter rate.
What's really happening?
Verdict
Opening the menu does not influence the Random Number Generator, so it is useless. It only gives the appearance that you have less battles because the time you spend opening the menu is time that you are not battling, so you are given the impression that you have more time with less battles.
