Classes of Pokemon
If you've ever wondered what people mean when they say Eeveelutions or the Blaziken evolution line, then this ought to help. It contains some less common terms, too. If I've missed any, please contact me.
Base Pokemon
Base Pokemon are Pokemon that are NOT Pseudo-Legendary, NOT Legendary, and have NOT evolved. A good example would be Zubat, because it has not yet evolved, and it is not special. Eevee is NOT a base Pokemon because it is a One off. The term Base Pokemon is not used a lot, but the Trading Card Game uses it.
Evolutions
Pokemon that have evolved, usually referred to as One evolution stage (it evolved one time), or Two evolution stage (evolves twice). Kingler is a one evolution stage because the Pokemon it evolved from, Krabby, evolved once to turn into Kingler. Blaziken is a Two evolution stage because its lowest form, Torchic, evolved twice to turn into Blaziken. This term is used mostly in the card game. Legendaries (with the exception of Phione, but its legendary status is disputed) evolve.
Pre-Evos and Babies
Pre-evos are any Pokemon that are pre-evolutions of another Pokemon. They tend to be classified as baby Pokemon. For example, Jigglypuff is the Pre-evo of Wigglytuff. Baby Pokemon are Pokemon classified as babies within the games by their breeding group, and can't breed.
Eeveelutions
Eeveelutions refers to any of the Pokemon Eevee evolves into.
The eons
Usually refers to Eevee's evolutions, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Iceon, and Leafeon, but sometimes it also refers to Eevee as well.
One Offs
Pokemon that you can only get once in the game, excluding breeding. All legendaries are one offs, because if you make them faint in the battles, you will never see them again. (I think there is an exception for Groudon and Kyogre in Emerald, but I can't remember).
Shinies
'Shiny' is a fan-made name to refer to Pokemon that are a different color and sparkle when you find them. The Red Gyarados is a shiny Pokemon. The official name for them is 'Alternate Color', as of the 3rd generation.
(Pokemon Name) Evolution line
Whenever you hear someone say, well, for example, the Blaziken or Torchic Evolution line, they are referring to all the Pokemon that evolve from, or into said Pokemon. For example, the Torchic evolution line consists of Torchic-Combusken-Blaziken. If there are three Pokemon, it will never refer to the middle one. If it branches off, it always refers to the earliest form unless it is a baby Pokemon.
Pseudo-Legendaries
Pseudo-Legendaries are Pokemon with very high stats that are close in Pokedex number to the actual legendary Pokemon, and tend to to have evolution lines of three Pokemon. Examples include Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite, and Larvitar, Pupitar, and Tyranitar
Legendaries
Legendary Pokemon. These are Pokemon such as Mew and Kyogre, which have abnormally high stats and can only be caught once in the game. Except for Latias and Latios, they are genderless. In the game, they are reffered to as Legendary (as well as in instruction manuals).
Event Pokemon
These are Pokemon that can only be obtained 'legally' (legally meaning without glitches, hacking, action replay/gameshark, or trading) through some way other than in the game (Pokemon not in the game by version, such as Meowth in Yellow and Groudon in Sapphire, do not count). They are named event Pokemon because you usually have to go to an event to get them (Mew, Celebi, Darkrai etc.). Although Jirachi isn't gotten by an event (a Pokemon Colosseum bonus disk), it is still considered an event Pokemon because there is no means with which to get it. mew, although it can be gotten by a glitch, is considered to be an event Pokemon because glitches are not intentional. Pokemon which have not yet had events but can't be obtained any other way (this is the case of Mew in Emerald) are still Event Pokemon.
Glitch Pokemon (Missingnos)
Glitch Pokemon refer to Pokemon that can only be gotten to through a glitch, with the most famous case being 'M' and Missingno. ??? in the 3rd generation is also a glitch Pokemon. There are various per series (I believe that Gold/Silver has none which can be accessed without Action Replay/Gameshark; the Japanese Version of Diamond and Pearl had a filler Pokemon if you had no extra Pokemon in a Double Battle when the Battle started). Missingno is a slang term that refers to any glithc Pokemon, regardless of its name. It is incorrect to refer to glitch Pokemon in this matter, since only one glitch is named Missingno.
