Soot and the Glass Workshop

The grass in Route 113 is covered in Soot. When you walk in one patch of grass, the soot comes off. If you go to the house on that route, you will find a man who will make you glass items out of that soot. He will give you the Soot Sack so that you can start collecting soot. Every time you walk in a patch of grass with soot, you gain one step of soot. If you walk in grass without soot, it doesn't count. Here are the items he can make:

Blue Flute - 250 steps
Yellow Flute - 500 steps
Red Flute - 500 steps
White Flute - 1000 steps
Black Flute - 1000 steps
Pretty Chair - 6000 steps
Pretty Desk - 8000 steps

I've found that the best way to get soot is to use Max Repels. They repel Pokemon for 250 paces, so you can collect soot uninterrupted. You won't get 250 steps of soot, since you have to cross areas without soot once you finish with a certain part of grass. However, if you repeat the process, you should start racking up the steps.
