Rotom and the Secret Key

The Pokemon Rotom can be caught once in the Old Chateau in the Eterna Forest. You'll have to go upstairs into the room with the television in it (second from the left) at night. The TV will be glowing. Check the television out with A and it will say "It looks as if there is a Pokemon in there. Bang the TV?" Press A, and you will enter a fight with a level 15 (level 20 if you are playing Platinum) Rotom. It's low-level and doesn't have any interesting things about it (though it has the Legendary Pokemon Music!), so make sure that if you are after the Elite Four that you trade in your high-level Pokemon for level 20-ish things. It's not that difficult to catch.

Now, Rotom isn't particularly interesting. It's rare. Supposedly, it can possess electric appliances (heck, after you catch it and check out the TV, it will say "It is af is the TV is malevolently glaring at you..."). This ability of Rotom is only explored in Pokemon Platinum.

There was a Wi-Fi/Toys 'R' Us event to get an item called the 'Secret Key'. With this item, Rotom becomes a much more interesting Pokemon.

If you have the item but haven't used it for some reason, here are the directions as to what to do with your brand-new key:

Go to Eterna City with a Pokemon that knows Cut, along with your Rotom.
Enter the team Galatic Building. This is what the Cut Pokemon is for - there are tree trees in front of the building.
Go to the upper-left corner of the first floor. Press A. The game will ask you if you want to use the key. Say 'YES' and a new region of the building will open up in that corner. Go through the door.
You will enter a room with five electronic appliances. Press A on any of them and Rotom will want to possess it. Say yes and Rotom will change form. The game will ask you if you want to delete a move to learn Rotom's appliance-specific move. Do as you want.
Move around. Professor Rowan will enter. His speech, for those of you who missed the event or want to read his speech again, is as follows:

"Ah, imagine finding you here. You must be eager to fill your Pokedex to be searching even here. What am I doing? I visit a professor I know in Eterna every so often. He tells me intriguing rumors of rare Pokemon sightings and such." He paces to the left, and then to the right. "A POkemon that slips into electric appliances you say... Hmm... That is soemwhat off from what I'ce heard about it. Hmm... tTHis is what I've heard. Long ago, there was a Pokemon that merged with a toy robot. Should that Pokemon be recognized as a new species or not... Debates over the issue were about ot start when they were rendered moot. The very topic of dicussion--the Pokemon-infused robot--disapperared." He paces to the left. "Anyway, this ROTOM... What an interesting Pokemon. So, you say it enters an appliance and essentially merges with the device. In the process, it may also learn new moves. In a way, I suppose it could be thought of as a mechanical Pokemon. Hmm...! Though it is utterly unique, it is undeniable a form of Pokemon. Fine, fine, so be it! No matter how old one gets, there will always be new Pokemon discoveries! Take care, (name)!" He leaves.

There are two notebooks in the room as well. The one to the upper-right reads like this:

"Our encounter was a sudden one. It was when I found my toy robot, one that I had earlier misplaced. At that instant, a Pokemon startlingly emerged from the lawn mower's motor! Clutching my robot, I stared, transfixed by the peculiar Pokemon." Would you like to keep reading? YES/NO. (This is repeated at each break, and shortened for convenience.)

"The Pokemon hovered in the air, held aloft by a power unseen. As if curious and unafraid of my presence, it floated toward me. Crackling sounds accompanied it, as if from static electricity in the air. Remarklably, it seemed the Pokemon was the source of this power! In a larm, I flinched, certain that my face would subjected to a shock. Much to my urprise, the Pokemon seemed to favor me with a smile."

"Finally, I came to realize that the POkemon only wished to be friends. I have decided to name this most wondrous Pokemon 'ROTOM.' Simple though it may be, ROTOM emerged to me from the motor of a lawn mower. Motor and ROTOM... Surely the link is obvious?"

"ROTOM is a POkemon that is simply sensational. That fact that it can turn invisible is simply the beginning. What makes ROTOM unique is its ability to enter and operate machinery!" This is about halfway through. Would you...

"ROTOM and I became fast friends. We were perpetual companions. The electricity from its body forbade contact, however. We could not touch, let alone hug or hold hands, but we cared not. For we were bonded on a much deeper, incorporeal level." ...

"A feeling of mischief got into me one day. Seeing ROTOM hovering, I decided to startle it--normally, I would not. Perhaps frightened, ROTOM discharged power beyond its usual range. I fell, stunned, into the arms of unconsciousness..."

"When I came to, to my horror I realized that ROTOM has disappeared. I searched high and low for my friend in desperation. 'Don't chastise yourself. The fault is mine. No harm done. Let us play as we always have.' Though my words poured out, my friend could not be found to hear them..." ...

"My search for ROTOM carried me far from home. It was in the town's rubbish heap that I again found my old toy robot. Curiously, our eyes met, then the tobot waved a hand as if in greeting. I knew then that I had found my lost friend. I ran to it and hugged ROTOM tight. Talking on and on." ...

"The robot's eyes lit up happily as I held it. I'm certain that, within it, ROTOM was emitting lots of electricity. Somehow, I felt I could understand ROTOM's thoughts better than before. Also, I realiedt hat we would remain friends thoughout our lives." The rest of the notebook is blank.

There is another notebook below that is much shorter.

"It was by pure chance that I obtained information about the Pokemon ROTOM. Remarkably, ROTOM has the ability to enter and merge with special motors. It's now known that ROTOM can stay inside a motor almost indefinitely. However, it will emerge if it enters a Union Room or a Wi-Fi Club. ROTOM will also emerge from the motor if it is left at the Day Care. ROTOM may also forget certain moves when it leaves a motor. This Pokemon requires exhaustive observation and analysis. To ensure that I get all the credit, my ROTOM research must be kept secret. They will come to recognize me as the scientific genius Char..." The rest of the notebook is blank.
