Sound Battles (Combo) in Mother 3
You may have noticed by now that pressing A or L to the beat of the music will cause you to get additional hits. You’ll probably have only accidentally gotten one extra hit before messing up the beat. Well, that’s what happened to me at least. Although many of the songs have loud percussion with an easy-to-grasp rhythm, actually getting the combos is harder than it seems… at first.
Obviously, you have to listen to the percussion (drums) and bass first to figure out the rhythm. This is what you will press A to. I find that it helps to be pressing in rhythm before you attack so that you’re already in place when it’s your turn. If you don’t know it yet, you can only get combos by attacking normally (the music note).
The highest combo you can get is 16 – that is, the first attack and then 15 extra hits. The highest combo I’ve gotten is 16. Slow songs are, in my opinion, the easiest songs. I think the best song to practice combos with is the Lobster song (you find them in Chapter 2 in the Gravedigger’s tunnel under his house). It’s very easy – 3 beats per measure, and no additional percussive sounds to distract you – just bum-tic-tic, bum-tic-tic, bum-tic-tic. As the old, worn-out saying goes ‘Practice makes perfect’, so run into enemies you can easily beat with a few punches and try to get a combo. The rock'n'roll song (plays when you fight the Jealous Bass and other instruments) is also easy. It has a very marked beat and is fast and fun to combo to.
You can also use Duster’s Hypnotic Pulse thing to put enemies to sleep and listen to their heartbeats. I haven’t tried this yet, but the magic musical ant recommends it.
If you’re playing the game on an emulator, there may be a problem. The emulator runs the game at a slightly slower speed and it takes a while longer for the keyboard to register hits than with the GBA/DS. The only solution I can think of is to hit the keys slightly ahead of time in hopes that it will sync up, but as I have never played on an emulator (because they run at slightly slower speeds and you have to use a keyboard unless you buy controllers for it), I’m not sure how feasible that is. Sorry. D:
